Trends in Marine Services for Subsea Telecoms
systems to be built or replace underserved routes, we see greater need for regional systems to meet the expansion of broadband intra-regionally. For marine services, this would indicate greater reliance on good route engineering, inshore cable protection, and the development of shallow water marine solutions to improve effectiveness of deployment and maintenance.Continuing technological developments to improve system reliability: Whether it’s the increased reliance on survey and lay software aboard vessels, faster signal processing, broadband access while at sea, or improved mechanical and

Offshore wind: One-stop Power Conversion
and frequency converters for wind turbines and ships can be talked about together, if you like one-stop shopping: “In general, the technology is quite similar. But we customize the technology for the specific end application,” said The Switch’s director of product marketing for marine solutions, Ville Parpala, who didn’t mind indulging us.“Some requirements are different for marine. For example, there are differences for the cooling system. Marine applications can use fresh water, for example, but wind needs closed-loop solutions. The generator speed is also different,
Mainstay to Build Wave Energy Device
Welsh workboat builders and marine engineers Mainstay Marine Solutions said it has won a contract to build and assemble the main structure for an Australian wave energy developer’s demonstration device.Measuring 75m long, 17.5m wide and 5m high, Bombora’s 1.5MW mWave wave energy converting device harnesses the potential of marine energy in the form of pressure on the seafloor. mWave features a series of membranes which rests beneath the ocean’s surface on the seafloor, and as waves pass over the device, air inside the membranes is pushed into a duct and through a turbine to generate
