Ocean Scientists to Share Latest Research in a New Video Contest
Ocean scientists interested in sharing their latest research discoveries through video are encouraged to submit videos highlighting your research to the nationwide Ocean 180 Video Challenge, with the possibility of winning a cash prize. The goal of the contest, sponsored by the Center for Ocean Science Education Excellence (COSEE) Florida, is to engage non-scientists and students in timely and relevant ocean science research while inspiring scientists to effectively share their discoveries and explorations with the public. The challenge is funded by the National Science Foundation.
“The ocean science research community is full of creative people doing fascinating research. The challenge is the perfect opportunity for them to explore new ways of making their research discoveries accessible to a broad audience while stimulating student interest in ocean science-related careers,” said Richard Tankersley, Florida Tech professor of biological sciences.
The objective for each scientist is to develop a three-minute video abstract of a recent peer-reviewed ocean-science publication for submission to the 2014 Video Challenge by Dec. 1, 2013. Ocean scientists, including undergraduate and graduate students, affiliated with United States-based institutions are eligible to participate. The top three video abstracts will receive cash prizes of $3,000 for first place, $2,000 for second place and $1,000 for third place.
Middle school classrooms, the target audience for all video submissions, will play a key role in determining the winners. They will participate in judging and evaluating the videos, engaging students in scientific research beyond the classroom. The top 10 video abstracts will be viewed by sixth-eighth grade students in registered middle school classrooms from all over the world who will select the top three videos. Teachers of all middle school classrooms are eligible to participate and must register their class by Dec. 6, 2013 to participate.
