The Fate of Macroalgae and Why it Matters
Macroalgae, or seaweeds (including kelp), are highly productive coastal habitats capable of absorbing significant quantities of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Previous studies have estimated that globally, 4–44 teragrams (1Tg = one million metric tons) per year of macroalgal-derived carbon may reach depths of 200m, where it may be sequestered for at least 100 years.TheFebruary issue of Marine Technology Reporter magazine includes a feature on the fate of macroalgae in southwest Greenland.
Breaking the Ice: How a Space-Based Initiative is Solving a Maritime Challenge
This winter, ice on the Great Lakes is expected to impact a maritime economy valued at $35 billion. The wealth of data provided by space-based assets offers a potential lifeline for navigating these frozen waters. However, data alone is not a solution. Without the means to translate raw satellite feeds into actionable intelligence, it remains an untapped resource, a digital haystack without a needle. In response, and in partnership with the U.S.

Opinion: Stronger Regulations Needed to Protect Our Oceans
Every ship leaving a shipyard with a substandard water treatment system will pollute the oceans for the next 25 years. This is a hidden crisis that fails to reach the public even though it is pretty established among those ever sailed on a commercial vessel and even some regulatory bodies, yet its impact on our marine ecosystems is devastating. The MARPOL Convention, which governs ship pollution, is simply not enough.
