Sotzing Joins Sea Machines as Engineering Director

Boston-based developer of autonomous vessel technology Sea Machines Robotics has hired Chris Sotzing as director of engineering.   Sotzing will be responsible for the development and deployment of the company’s Sea Machines 300 technology system, as well as managing the engineering team. He reports to COO Jim Daly from the Boston office.   Sotzing joins Sea Machines from SeeByte, where he served as an engineering manager supporting unmanned vehicle technologies in Boston. Prior to relocating to Boston, Sotzing held positions of increasing responsibility for nearly nine years at

Scottish Carbon Capture and Storage Project Underway

A groundbreaking new carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in North East Scotland has set out to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, initially from the St Fergus gas processing terminal, for transport, injection and permanent storage into a deep underwater reservoir.   CCS is an emerging technology that involves capturing CO2 emissions, transporting it and securely storing it in undersea rock formations to prevent it from entering the atmosphere.   Project Acorn is a low cost CCS system in Northeast Scotland which could be operational by 2023. Kawasaki Tests Prototype AUV in UK Waters

Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. announced it has completed verification testing of its autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) in U.K. waters.   With a focus on the growing demand for pipeline maintenance in the offshore oil and gas fields, Kawasaki said it has been developing AUVs utilizing sophisticated underwater vehicle technologies fostered in-house over the years, with support from a subsidization project by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT).   The AUV verification test was carried out from November 6 to 20, 2017 at The Underwater Centre, a marine

Professor Sebastian Geiger, Director of the Institute of Petroleum Engineering (IPE) and Foundation CMG Chair at Heriot-Watt University, has been awarded the 2017 Alfred Wegener Award by the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE). The Award is made to an Association member who has made an outstanding contribution over a period of time to the scientific and technical advancement of one or more of the disciplines in the Association, particularly petroleum geoscience and engineering.   The citation for the Award mentioned that his contributions to the field of carbonate

Industry Funding to Boost UK Offshore O&G Research

A major funding package for the Institute of Petroleum Engineering (IPE) at Heriot-Watt University will directly support research and training for the future of the industry in U.K. offshore waters.    Heriot-Watt’s Chief Scientist, Professor John Underhill, has secured funding of £416,000 (approximately $537,000) from Verus Petroleum, an independent oil company active on the U.K. Continental Shelf (UKCS).    The award will support a number of oil and gas related training and Applied Geoscience research activities in IPE including the NERC Center for Doctoral

Subsea technology company Sonardyne International Ltd. UK, has announced the appointment of Ioseba (Joe) Tena as its new Global Business Manager for Marine Robotic Systems.
